Studio Updates Week 1

On Thursday we were also given a briefing on what our Assignment would be: Transforming a Product into a Service Design. We were to convert one of our past projects from a product to a service. We had to expand the scope of your product from a holistic and user-centric perspective to provide added value to meet your user needs. We had to consider a broader scope of interaction and touchpoints of the user getting to know the product, the space of which it is being sold/introduced, to the point where it is being brought and utilized.
We were given times to go through the various projects our team had done that we think would be suitable. It was also gave us the time to get to know each of ours strengths and skill sets. Through the discussions we managed to decide on one of my old project, Umbala, a smart locker system, that I design for my last year in poly. It is a smart locker system that has a corresponding app which allows students to book and monitor the contents in their lockers. It also allows for technical officers to monitor and ensures lockers are cleared for the next batch. Overall we saw how the project was one that we could expand upon quite easily into a service design of selling it and improving the app integration. It also had an easy target audience of students that we can easily find. We establish the areas we needed to research for this and some targets like a survey to be made.
Umbala
- space saving smart locker system for students
- has an app as well
- got a lot of potential to translate into a service
- n user: students who do a lot of design work requiring more space in their lockers
- wld be interesting to think abt what problems the school wld have implementing it
- think of the stakeholders
What We need to develop
product - space saving smart locker system for students
target user - students
service -
user persona -
problem -
service blueprint -
Framework
1. discover
- insight into the problem
2. define
- the area to focus upon
3. develop
- potential solutions
4. deliver
- solutions that work
Things to research:
Research on students; which students use lockers the most? What do they use it for?
Research on school; what are their current lockers like?
Research on current locker systems; how do the current locker systems work?
Research on locker manufacturers
https://www.godrejsingapore.com/our-products/metal-furniture/metal-lockers.html
Research on the administration specific to the lockers
Research on study areas (since we implement that too); do students feel like they could use more study areas? Is the space in schools plausible for the locker-study area to be part of it?
making a touchpoint to selling the product (website?)
the touchpoint for the students experience it (locker app system)
touchpoint for students using it (the customisable options)
