Week 1 Lectures

Tuesday

This week lesson serve as an introduction to the course and to the team mates that we would be assigned to. The purpose of this session was to get to know our teammates and their strength. As we all come from different background, it is neccessary for us to know our strength & weaknesses, and our work styles. In order to do that we had to establish the values and behaviours that we would like to foster in our team as well as the norms we would like to adhear to you. We were also introduced to IDEO 10 faces of innovation. We were to identify one dominent trait from the list and 2 minor ones that we relate to. Additionally, we also had to had to identify the possible team roles we should have through the roles we have identify ourselves in. We were to put all these information into our team's Miro Board and present it to the class through a video.

Design first started as a service for those who have the means but slowly we have evolved to make design accessible to all. This is how Design hinking comes in. Design Thinking is a methodology to innovation that takes an iterative, human-centered approach to problem solving and identifying opportunities. All of have different processes of design and different perspective. How do we integrate all of our processes, perspectives and ideas into one journal. When a designer is a very cognizant of his process, they will dominate a collaborative progect. Which is isn't good as we do not learn form new perspectives. So we need to establish an equaliser in the group. If you can't identify or critique processes, then we are lagging behind in the team. Wicked problems are becoming a focus on our solution which is hard to solve on our own and has no one solution. So t requires mulitiple solutions and perspective to solve.

Design Council's Double Diamond

Look at the movemnt of ideas in the process

Standford d.school's Design Thinking Process

Each steps is given equal importance. You give just as much time in empathising as you do prototyping. Standford is a school so Empathise is focused on more than in the working industry. It is so they can develop this traits in future designers. Hence why they focus on testing as the last stage and not producing

Rotman School

See how the ideas converges and diverges at different points.

IDEO Design Thinking Process

it is like a roller coaster. It is about the questions, asking the 'How' instead of the 'What'

IBM's Design Thinking Process

Give concrete form to abstract ideas. Do not leave ideas as abstract but think about how to implement it.

NNGroup's Design Thinking Process

Focuses on looking back to look forward for new ideas

It is important as a group to decide which process we want to employ taking in consideration our teammates, time, etc. Be very critical on the content of your design thinking process

Design Thinking is a non-linear process/framework. Focus on the users. There are many iteration to design and it is important to test.

Types of design

Human-Centered Design, Tech-driven design, Functional Design, Business Design, Cost Driven Design.

Focused on Human-centered design. We start with people. What are their needs and wants?
