Week 1

COMBINED THURSDAY LESSON

For the first lesson,  we were introduced to both Quentin & Siwei, our lecturers for Design Principles & Consultation and Studio Consultation respectively. In this lesson, we were briefed on our overall project, Singapore Green Plan. For this project, we have to respond to the SG Eco Fund brief guided by one of the following pillars; Environment Benefits, Comunity Engagement & Innovation. Our project can address one or more of these components but it has to relate to our domain, 3D.

In order to inspire us since this was our first lesson, some examples were given of the types of projects that are possible. Here are a few that I really was inspired by:

One of the first projects they introduced to us was a project that was aimed at the blind who still desire to cook. When someone cannot see, they will struggle to do the things they used to do. And one such thing is cooking as it is filled with many dangers such as high heat and sharp knives. Mr Kevin Chiam decided to address the issues by creating a series of kitchen utensils to help them with these everyday tasks.  It was really inspiring to see how being focused on one problem can lead to amazing results. Even though it is not a massive product, it is through these results we see that it is the small things that have the biggest impact.

Another project that really caught my attention was the paraSITE Inflatable Shelter which uses the hot air from HVAC systems to pump it into an inflatable shelter for the homeless during the winter season. I think what was really inspiring was the tenacity the designer, Michael Rakowitz, had in creating different variations to adjust to the law in the different states. I know that there are certain states that try to get homeless people to stop camping in certain areas of the city for public image. And even though they do not want homeless people around, they don't create schemes to help them but delegate them to one corner of their cities. I think that this not only helps those that can't find their home, but it also brings to attention this issue that is currently ongoing.

I think the one that was so interesting and truly out of the box was a fashion collection by Hussein Chalayan in February 2000. I have never seen anything like this before and was truly fascinated by how he could interweave this 2 vastly different genres of design so seamlessly. It was really a marvel as he didn't just make use of the fabric but every single component of the chair and table. Another of his work that was also super cool was his Transformer Dress fashion collection. Using very intricately hidden wire under the dresses, he is able to morph the dress into another design without touching it. I think that I can relate to the fact that he doesn't have a set medium of design and has a love of experimenting with different style. I myself also struggle to find where I want to go in the future as I am interested in many different areas. I guess it serve as inspiration what I can do in my future.

The final project that was really interesting was an installation called reverse of volume RG by Yasuaki Onishi. It is a work sorely made of glue and plastic sheet, with cardboard helping form the shape of the plastic sheet while the glue dries. It is so interesting to see how far you can push one simple material into something so unimaginably beautiful. What is most important in creating something beautiful is not the material but the person behind it. Yasuaki Onishi trusted in the processes of creating his masterpiece. And even though it is a tedious process, it is trusting that the process will turn out well. I think that when I saw the process of him creating it, I just saw the simplicity in just continuing on with what you set out to do. Sometimes its easy for me to lose sight of where I am headed as I desire exciting things. But I believe that only by trusting the process and journey will we see it through to the end.

RESEARCH FOR PROJECT

Did some research on what topics to focus on.

1. Blind Comunities

Choosing Clothes (Being adventurous with their clothes)
Washing clothes (Organising clothes)

4. Elderly

Wearing clothes

Many Elderly are also blind

Week 2

THURSDAY LESSON

This lesson was a continuation of the previous week lesson in which we continue to research on the topics to focus on. we were also introduced to The Story of Stuff website which highlights the bleak reality of consumerism and the effect it has. Afterwards we were given time to continue to do our research while our lecturer, Siwei, walked around to discuss our ideas with us. After taking her advice, it gave me some direction on how to continue my research. At the end of the class, all of us gathered as a class to share and change our ideas.

RESEARCH FOR PROJECT

Continuation on the research of what topics to focus on from last week.

Blind Comunity

How do they choose their clothes and can they be adventurous with their clothes?

- Get someone to shop for you who knew your sense of style beforehand

- Those that used to be able to see will have more solid opinions about them based on what they have seen in the past. Someone who used to be blind will based it more on external factor

How do they organise clothes for washing?

- Organising socks would be hard (or any cloths sets like PJs

How do the blind shop for themselves?

Types of blind people and what can & can't they do

What is the ideal living condition for the blind?

- To be able to live independently

Week 3

TUESDAY LESSON

For our first lesson with Quentin, he first got us to identify our strengths and weaknesses. From there we had to ask ourselves how we can accentuate & leverage our strength. This was my attempt for my self at the side. After which we had to come up with one for our current project. (Ps I kind of forgot about this since my topic took a very drastic turn}

After that he went through with us what product design was with us which does have many nuances in itself. Then he went through with us what a good design was. What determines a good and bad design is more of a matter of Perception, Perspectives and Appreciation. From there he got us to play a game to understanding of Perception and Communication. We had to break out into 2 groups of three with one of us just observing the game. In each team, there are 3 roles: the builder who can't see, the person that can talk but cannot see the image needed to be build and the one who can see the image but cannot speak. This was a test our communication skills as we tried to get the builder to put the pieces properly. We switched to different roles each time so that we could get experience all the roles. We got better and better at this game over time. This was for us to see the importance of communication.

After the game, he went through with us the 4 key drivers of design. The first was Design Language / Semantics which is The intangible meaning, spirit and emotions behind the design. The second is User Centricity which is basically if it keeps the user's needs in mind. The third is Technology which is as it name implies. The last is Sustainability which is about the product life cycle loop: where and how does it begin, how would it end or regenerate?

In order to demonstrate this he got us to choose an item that we had on us now and to describe if it was a good or bad design based on the four key drivers that we had touched on. I chose my own pencil case for this exercise to explain on. After the class had taken turns, he told us we would be doing this again next week but we had to have one good and one bad item to share about. Lastly, he gave us a short quiz to test if we were observate during the class

COMBINED THURSDAY LESSON

This lesson was our interim presentation in which we had to present about the research we had done the pass 2 weeks and the research topics and area of focus we are going towards. After we had given our presentation, Siwei and Chong Beng would give us their feedback regarding it.

PRESENTATION SLIDES

This are the presentation slides of my interim presentation on the area of design interest and research topics I wished to undertake.

FEEDBACK

For the research topic on the blind community, It is important that I seek out people who are truly blind so that I can understand what their key areas of needs are. Currently the issue that I had given on washing their clothes isn't a strong pain points and there are already solutions out there that solves the problem.

For the topic of reusing printing cartridges, it is more of a system-type solution that is needed so a tangible physical product would not be easily made through it. Hence it isn't a viable project brief.

Week 4

TUESDAY LESSON

The first part of today's lesson was to present our good and bad items. I chose to bring my mom's adaptor as the good product and my dance shoe bag as my bad product. Afterwards, he went into the lesson proper on Design Semantics, looking at its Context, Spirit, and Analogous Inspiration. In order to demonstrate how this work, Chun Beng played an altered version of a game. In the regular version of the games, there are 2 teams with one player from each being the clue giver. They are able to see from a grid of words which belongs to their team and the bomb words. Typically, they will give a clue using regular words but in this version, we had to use textures to give out the clue. And based on the texture, we had to choose from a grid of descriptors, feeling-like words. It was really funny seeing how all of us understood the meaning of certain textures differently. It shows us the importance of what vibe and language we wish to show the user with our product.

Week 5

TUESDAY LESSON

Today's class was an online consultation as our teacher was online. During the 2 week gap between our interim presentation, I had decided to change the direction of my project to focusing on flip flops. These are my research on it below.

Flip Flops

Flip Flop

Is there a way to make footwear that gets griper when wet?

When we wear our shoes for an extended period of time, their soles get worn out and hence they lose their grip. So you are more likely to slip. Because of that they get thrown out. Currently, a lot of flip-flops get thrown into the sea every year and a lot of them end up on the beaches of Africa

Can we improve the design of the flip flop such that it doesn't get thrown out as often?

The Elderly are more prone to falling over when it rains

Flip Flop need to replace every three to four months, and it can't be recycled

After showing this to Quentin, he started to discuss how we can further evolve this problem. He first started by asking how would we go about reusing a slipper. The thing that gets worn out the most would be the soles of the slippers. So obviously the solution would be to cut the sole off or make it peelable. However, ultimately another reason that people throw away their slippers would be because of the smell and how dirty they become. This ultimately makes it very hard to reuse them. Because of that, he suggested going towards the direction of hotel slippers. This was because hotel slippers are used mostly at home and hence will not likely get as dirty as regular slippers. It also won't wear out as quickly. Plus hotel slippers are made to be disposable and hence contribute to waste. So we can think of a reusable one for hotels and travellers. He asked me to consult with Siwei on Thursday and he will meet with me online on Friday to further discuss my project.

THURSDAY LESSON

On Thursday, Siwei went through with us how to do a Product Matrix and a SWOT test. In order to have a sense of what we want to design for, it is important to give ourselves some keywords that we wish to define our end product as. Through those keywords, we can compare them to the current products in the market and see where they stand based on our criteria. We can also use that as a basis of where we want our own product to stand between the current products in the market. This can be done through a Product Matrix. After creating a Product Matrix, we will be able to identify products that are relatively close to where we want our own product to stand. From there we can do a SWOT test on those identified products to have a better understanding of the product and how we can further improve on it.

1.png

Afterwards, she also went through with us interviewing both our target users, as well as experts on the topic of our project. By interviewing with experts, we are able to understand things better and gain more in-depth understanding. And it is obviously very important to understand our target users as those are the needs that we would be addressing. So on Friday, I send out a survey to my friends and acquaintances to gather results on their own habits in regard to hotel slippers. These are the questions I asked and my key finding from the survey.

Questions Asked

Section 1 (Demographic Questions)

How old are you?

How often do you travel overseas pre-covid period?

When was the last time you travelled overseas?

What type of shoes do you bring while travelling?

Do you usually use the slippers provided by the hotel?

Where do you usually wear the slippers?

What activities do you usually do with the slippers on?

Have you taken or considered taking the hotel slippers home with you?

Section 2 (Use of Hotel Slipper outside of the hotel)

Why did you decide to take the slipper home with you?

Where else do you use the hotel slipper at?

How long do you use the hotel slippers before throwing them?

Do you have any complaints about the hotel slipper that you took back with you?

If you still have any of the hotel slippers that you have taken with you, could I trouble you to take a picture of it. Thank you.

Section 3 (Not taking Hotel Slipper)

Why did you not take the hotel slippers home with you? (Why did you only consider taking it with you?)

What would make you decide to take the hotel slippers with you?

Do you usually wear slippers in your own home?

Key Takeaways

1) Most people will use the hotel slippers provided (67%)

2) People usually use the slippers in the hotel room. Some use it in the bathroom, some don't. Depending on the type, some people can opt to bring it to the pool or go around the hotel.

3) They are mostly just used for walking around the room.

4) Majority of people take hotel slippers home with them.

5) Reason people take hotel slippers is because they are free. Usually take back the higher quality one to be used at home

6) When they take back the slippers, they mainly use it at home, especially when its cold. They also use it for other hotel stay or on longer flights or in their office. One also pass it to their grandparent for their us (so sweet)

7) They usually keep it for a few weeks to a month. Depends on the quality and how long it takes for it to get worn out.

8) Most don't complain about the slippers because its free but main thing is that it is flimsy

9) People don't usually take home slippers because they are flimsy and already meant to be thrown.

After that Siwei did do an individual consultation with each of us. From there I told her about my change in topic and she told me that it was a better topic and that people also use hotel slippers on flights as well. She related a lot to this topic as she herself also collected a lot of these hotel slippers. On Friday, I did have another consultation with Chun Beng in which I went through with him what Siwei said regarding my change in topic. I also conveyed to him that I had planned to send a survey and the question that I was to ask. Chunbeng told me to go do some research on materials and find old hotel slippers to experiment on.

Week 6

THURSDAY LESSON

Siwei was sick today so Quentin took over the class to make up the Tuesday class. Unfortunately, I was down with covid so I couldn't attend the class that day. But during this class, they went through what a persona and a user journey map are. But I did do them on my own for this project as shown below.

Persona
User Journey Map

Week 7

COMBINED TUESDAY LESSON

This lesson was our second interim presentation in which we had to present what is our research/topic insight and problem statement or design intent with rational given through our research. The research should be things like SWOT analysis, user research & findings, user personas, user journey map. We also had to present our design direction and ideas through sketches and quick mock-ups. Below are my presentation slides

2.1.png

FEEDBACK

  • A bit more research on the reason behind people's behaviours in regards to hotel slippers in hotel, plane or home

  • Doesn't have to be narrowed down to hotel slippers (Can be generalised to footwear which includes socks, sleeves, etc)

  • Need to narrow down which scenario to focus on (Plane, Hotel or Personal). Separate the journey maps. What is the different between Plane & Hotel usage?

  • Ideas:

  • For the recycled flip flop, instead of a shoe, we could make sleeves that are one-time use, allowing for the shoe to be reused

COMBINED THURSDAY LESSON

During this class, we had individual consultations with one of the lecturers. We were assigned to either Siwei or Quentin as our lecturer in charge of us. I was assigned to Quentin as my lecturer in charge.  From my consultation with him, he did reiterate the point given to me on Tuesday while expanding on how I should go about it. I need to basically redefine my own problem statement clearly. This can be done by revising my own problem statement to be more detailed and seeing what are the key touch points. From there, I will need to start making mock-ups and experimenting on how to make an indoor footwear compact.

Week 8 (Term Break)

During my term break, I worked on the areas discussed with Quetin . Below are the things I worked on:

REVISED USER JOURNEY MAP
User Journey Map 1.png

Q: What do you do with the disposable shoes after the passenger leaves?

A: Usually when they are cleaning up, they will throw away disposable slippers no matter what their condition (Used or unused). Passengers don't usually take them home.

MOCKS UPS & SKETCHES

Week 9

TUESDAY LESSON

For this lesson, Quetin got us to come up with an elevator pitch for our project. An elevator pitch is, as its name suggests, pitching your idea in the time span of an elevator ride. This means that our speech has to be precise yet engaging to engage the person we are speaking to as we have only got like 10 seconds to present it to them. So we each took turns presenting our elevator speech after which Chun Beng suggested edits to it. The time we were given was shorten each time. We did this for 3 rounds so that we could boil it down to its essentials. My attempts of it are below:

After which he approuch us each to give us some consultation time. For myself, he said that for my revised journey map should really narrow down what are the important pain points the user goes through. For my mock up that I had, he said that it can be used for next week presentation as one of my design direction. He also provided me a revised problem statement below:

How might we create reusable indoor footwear for travelers to use in hotels or flights in order to reduce the waste produced?

THURSDAY LESSON

On Thursday, I had another consultation with SIwei who said that my research was alright. However, for my prototypes currently, she gave some feedback on how my first idea did have issue in terms of wearability and what the sole should be in contact with. She said that it would be better for me to not just do mock ups but to also sketch out my ideas. As for my prototypes, I should do them in a fast and dirty way to get my idea across. This can be done by just using glue and existing products. This will help to quicken the process. So base on her suggestions, I did a bunch of quick mocks and drawing over the weekends to prepare for next week presentations.

Week 10

TUESDAY LESSON

This lesson was online as Quentin was overseas. The interim presentation later was also held online as Siwei was also at home as she had an online class with her other students. During the morning class, Quetin went through a bit about project branding. We had to create a description for our project as well as the tagline of it. We also had to start thinking of names for our project. Below are what I have come up with:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

1st Try

On average 400 million hotel slippers get thrown out each year. Hotel Slippers are designed for one-time use and hence don't last long. And even if they are taken home, they will eventually still get thrown out. Hence I am making portable & reusable indoor footwear for travellers to use on flights or in hotels. This way we can reduce the waste that hotel slippers produce.

2nd Try

On average 400 million hotel slippers get thrown out each year. Hotel Slippers are designed for one-time use and hence don't last long. Therefore, I present to you a portable & reusable indoor footwear that travellers can use on flights or in hotels. Through this we can reduce the waste we produce from throwing out these slippers.

FEEDBACK

  • Most of my ideas went along the idea of rolling the shoe up. Maybe I can pursue an idea of having a fold line to fold the shoe upwards to store it

  • For the 2nd idea, the steps to packi is rather cumbersome

  • For the 3rd idea, it can turn out to be a cute design. Do take note of where the pockets of air are in the slippers. Can look for similar products to give the feel of the product. Could try making the air pockets in vertical strips too.

  • Make sure to focus on the material and form of the product

Week 11

TUESDAY LESSON

This week lesson Chun Beng was still overseas so we had online lessons. This week lesson he got us to present to him our chosen name as well as the logo we designed. From there Chun Beng would provide us with feedback on it. The name and logo I presented is at the side. Feedback given was that my name was too long and that my logo wasn't that pretty. So he suggested a few different name that I could use and he told me to ideate more on it and base it on my final product form, I did ideate on a few more logo afterwareds

After this Chun Beng showed us some Kickstarter videos of various projects. After we are done with making our final prototype, we had to create a video about it that is able to explain and sell the idea of our project. We were tasked with creating a storyboard of the video for our product. I think I based the storyline on my elevator pitch as it already has a generally good flow to it. I think that mine has a relatively easy story that I can showcase according to Chun Beng. This is my attempt at it.

THURDAY LESSON

On Thursday, I had anther consultation with Siwei in which she suggested that for the bottom of the sole should be made out of silicone as it is washable and doesn't deteriote when wash. Since most of my ideas were rolling the shoe up, silicone provided that flexibility as well. The example she showed me was that of strapless silicone bras. They are able to remain on the skin without moving. Hence if I were to use silicone, I wouldn't need to put many grooves on it. From there the top of the shoe is up to me to ideate. So what I had to do was find silicone and make the base of the shoe. Since I had made a bunch of mock ups, Siwei could easily tell me the thickness the sole needed to be. She suggested making a mold with different types of groves and finishing.

After last week interim, I did do some more prototypes below. But after the consultation, I did some more sketches on the form of the form of the shoe

On Friday, I had another online consultation with Chun Beng who I shared my idea from Siwei with him. I think he was sceptical of the idea and told me to try out other ideas such as folding it in half or having them separate into 2 pieces. For the silicone part, he told me I should just go and buy some existing silicone from existing product. He also told me to go look for more material that I think could be used for the shoe. So during the weekends I did went to daiso and other places to get some materials.

Week 12

TUESDAY LESSON

For this week lesson, it was a online consultation with Chun Beng as it was E-Learning week and he was still overseas. I showed him the prototypes that I had made using the silicone materials and other materials that I had. I think he gave me some tips on the 2 piece sole as they were at this stage pretty loose. He suggested that I should try and make the velco more into the sole so that I was more flushed. This way it should hopefully not be so shakely. There were other mock ups I showed him such as the one with the bamboo like sole. But truthfully it was hard to properly convey my ideas since most of them were physical models that he had to see in real life.

Testing Silicone Sole
Testing Bamboo Bottom
Testing 2 Part Sole
THURDAY LESSON

On Thursday, I could show Siwei my mockups and the material I had brought.  Based on the things I had brought, she asked me to continue to ideate on how the shoe should fasten and be tucked in.  She gave me valuable tips on how the shoe should ideally fold with both soles touching each other. She asked me just draw out some ways that the thing could be fastened. She also gave Jan, Sung, Kim and me the assignment of shopping for fabric together.

Week 13

TUESDAY LESSON

This lesson was at the studio physically. From there Chun Beng could see all my mocks ups and sketches easily. I think He took this time to catch up on my progress with the project since it had been hard to show him what I had done. I think he started to play around with my mocks up and see what could be done with them. This led him to try and cut out the sock prototype from before to try and see if he was comfortable. He also pointed out a different direction I could go in which was using EVA foam which can be found in yoga mats to make the sole. In terms of a comfortable shoe, he reasoned that it needed a bit more firmness found in foam like that. So he drew out a sketch of the thing and told me to go find the material and test the idea.

Chun Beng's Sketch
Sketches
Mockup

Chun Beng also gave us a lesson on CMF: Colour, Material & Finishing. He showed us his book on CMF as well as some of the samples of different colours and textures of the year. From all the given samples, he told us to come up with 2 different words describing ourselves and we had to come up with a palette using the different colours and textures there. The phrase that I came out with was: Casual Bubbliness. It was quite a fun experience doing this exercise and learning more about myself and my classmate.

From there, we were given the assignment of coming up with a mood board that suited our current project. My theme for this mood board was "Casual Luxury". The initial moldboard that I came up with was given the feedback that it couldn't really tell that it was for travelling. So I readjusted my mood board to the one to the side.

THURDAY LESSON

On Thursday, I had a quick consultation with her and told her the ideas that Chun Beng had mentioned. I think that Siwei concern with EVA foam was whether it would deteriorate if it was put in the wash many times. It is proven that silicone could work but with EVA Foam it is not as obvious. Based on that and continued research on it, I couldn't guarantee it would work without proper material testing which I don't think I could do within the time. She told me to focus on my user and determine her pain points to direct me to my final design. After that, I sketched a bit more and settled on a final design. I just had to make it which I did during the weekends.

Week 14

TUESDAY LESSON

During the first half of the lesson, we went through our storyboard for our video again. My storyboard remain relatively the same as previously with a few minor tweaks to the wording. Below is my story board. After which the rest of the time was used to finish up our presentation slides.

FEEDBACK

  • Branding: Not very obvious name and not an ideal logo ----> Ideate on a few more ideas

  • Colour Scheme: Not very appealing. I need to do some more research on it

  • Marketing: Who am I marketing? The everyday travellers, not the luxury market. We need to consider them

  • Material choices: The fabric feels nice but could trap dirt ----> Look at other materials to see the ideal. For Bag: has to be able to trap the smell inside. So not so porous

  • Needs to render the slippers when folded, probably the bag also

  • Making it: Use a sewing machine and fabric glue. Need to work on the fabric sewing pattern.

Week 15 - 16

These two weeks were the final lap towards our submission. There was still classes on Thursday and Tuesday but we were given flexibility in doing what we needed to do to finish our project and other assignments. These are the things that I had to be completed before my final presentation:

BRANDING
The first thing I had to do was to develop a better name for my project so I ideated on a bunch of names and showed them to Chun Beng. He liked the name Swopp and Fold Flop. In the end, he decided that FlopFlop would be the better name.

He drew me a sample of the logo to ideate from. He emphasised how my logo shouldn’t be too complicated with the font and suggested I used the Metropolis font. From his sketch, I ideate and shifted the form around and got my final design below.

COLOUR SCHEME

I made a general colour palette for the types of colours I wanted my shoe to have since I wanted to have a range of different colours that suited different people. Below are the colours I chose and the final coloured rendering of my shoe.

Colour Scheme #1
Colour Scheme #2

FINAL PROTOTYPE

I went to my aunt’s place to make the final prototype. Some of the pattern pieces were adjusted to ensure it could be sewed properly. This was hands stitched by my aunt.

SKETCHES

For the final submission, we had to present the sketches of our ideation process. We had to have at least 10 development sketches and at least 5 sketches of our final design from different views. We also had to have some technical drawings of our final design which includes an orthographic drawing, an exploded view as well as a CMF table.

VIDEO

I needed to find a carpeted surface to film at so I went back to my old school Ngee Ann Poly to film at Our Space with the help of my friends. This was for the scene in which the person put on and wear my prototype. After that, I had to film a few more scenes at home and edited them. This is the final video:

PRESENTATION BOARD

Using all the details that I have detailed for my project, I created the 2 presentation board that showcased all the important details of my final design:
